Background of the Study
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in the economic development of many regions, including Zamfara State, Nigeria. However, despite their importance in providing employment and contributing to local economies, many SMEs, particularly mini-supermarkets, face challenges that hinder their growth and sustainability. One of the most critical issues faced by these enterprises is financial mismanagement, which includes poor financial planning, inadequate record-keeping, failure to monitor cash flow, and inefficient allocation of resources (Adeoye & Kola, 2023).
Financial mismanagement can lead to various negative outcomes, including cash shortages, inability to meet operational costs, and even business closure. For mini-supermarkets in Zamfara State, this problem is often exacerbated by factors such as lack of access to formal financial services, poor financial literacy, and unstable economic conditions. Given the importance of these businesses in local economies, understanding the role of financial mismanagement in SME failure is crucial for providing recommendations that could help sustain and grow mini-supermarkets in the state.
Statement of the Problem
Many mini-supermarkets in Zamfara State experience financial difficulties, which often lead to business failure. Financial mismanagement, including poor budgeting, inadequate savings, and lack of financial monitoring, is a major contributing factor. This study will explore the extent of financial mismanagement among mini-supermarkets in Zamfara State and assess its impact on business failure.
